1. What is the philosophy of the school? Wind in the Willows has a child-centered philosophy. Our emphasis is creativity, socialization and language development. We believe in a child-directed curriculum and provide many opportunities for dramatic play both indoors and out. We have a mixed age (family) grouping, allowing for relationships to develop naturally over time between the children and with the teachers.
2. What ages do you take?
Wind in the Willows enrolls children aged 3 years to 5 years 9 months. Children
must be three years old and toilet trained to enroll.
3. Can my child attend both the am and pm program? No, children
may attend 2, 3 or 5 half days a week either in the mornings or afternoons.
There are no full day schedules offered.
4. Do you have extended care? No.
5. When does school start? We start school the Wednesday following Labor Day. Parents must attend our 'Back to School Night' the Tuesday night before the first day of school.
6. What is the school calendar? We start school the Wednesday following Labor Day and run through mid-June. We have the same holidays as most public and private schools - two weeks at the end of December, one week for spring break and the same school holidays observed by the S.F.U.S.D. calendar. There may be a summer session offered, usually for the month of July, depending on interest.
7. What are the hours of the school? Drop off time for the morning session is between 8:30 and 9 am. Pick up time is 11:45 am. Drop off time for the afternoon session is between 12:50 and 1:15 pm and pick up is at 4:00 pm
8. How many children are enrolled in each session? There are 18 children enrolled per half day session.
9. How many teachers are there? Our staff consists of one director/teacher and 3 other teachers who, we are proud to say, have a combined 50 years of experience in early childhood education. The student teacher ratio at any given time is 6:1.
10. How is tuition handled? Yearly tuition is broken down into 10 monthly installments or you can pay once or twice a year if you prefer.
11. Do you accept children with special needs? Special needs students are welcome depending on the school's ability to accomodate their needs. Parents and teachers will confer together regarding the best plan for the child.
12. What is the application process? Parents attend a tour of the school, at which time they will receive an application for enrollment for the following Fall session. Tours are typically offered from October through March. These initial tours are for parents only. Tours in any given year are offered to families whose children will be at least three years old by October 31 of the following Fall Session. Those who do meet this cut-off date will be invited to tour the school the following year. Click here for tour information.
Applications are then put on the waiting list in chronological order determined
by post mark. Beginning in April, families on the waiting list will be
contacted in chronological order and offered positions that may be open
for the following Fall Session. At this time, the family will be invited
to come for a visit to the school with their child. After this visit,
an offer letter will be given to the family and a reply is expected within
48 hours.
